transmission

The primary transmission of General was the used 4L60E transmission. The 4L60E trans, a descendant of the 700R4 and 700R4, has an extensive history of backing several powerful motors. In 1994, GM started using the 4L60E in all rear-wheel drive vehicles until 2001, when the performance requirements exceeded the current capabilities which was then replaced with the 4L65E. The 4L65E was built using the same platform as the 60 but with a few distinctions. The 4L60E is powered with 4-pinion planetaries. They can generate an output of 360 ft. The 4L65E makes use of 5-pinion planetaries as well as an input shaft made of hardened steel, that boosted torque to 38 ft.lbs. This makes the 4L65E a great alternative to upgrade your current tranny.

A complete teardown is needed to change the planetary carriers. This isn't the best moment to start if you've never done it before. Although it's not the most challenging task but it's certainly not the most straightforward. To complete the job correctly it is necessary to have a few specialized tools. For a proper dismantling and reassembling 4L60E transmission, you will require a rear Clutch Spring Comppressor Universal Pump Remover and Front Pump Alignment Band.

The 4L60E automatic transmission is an electronic controlled unit, identified as such by the "E" after the name. The 700R4 was named 4L60 in 1993 after the introduction of the 4L60E. This is important as while they share some parts, they are different transmissions. In 1995, GM converted the 4L60E converter lockup circuit into the Pulse Width Modulated circuit. This kind of lockup circuit offers a smoother transition as it pulses the signal instead simultaneously. The pump will be marked with a "PWM" label in the case of a PWM type tranny. It is important to note that the tranny model must match the computer inside the vehicle.

We used a variety of kits in this build. An Trans-Go Reprogramming Kit as well as a Sonnax Billet 4th-gear "Super Hold" Servo, a Raybestos Z-pack clutch kit, and Red Eagle Red-Oxide clutches. We cherry selected the clutch kit making use of the Z-pack to make the clutches with 3-4 gears. These clutches are designed to be durable and strong. The Red-Oxide clutches are more stable for 1-2.

Another piece that is a must in any high-performance 4L60E is a beefy sun-shell gear. It is vital for reverse and second application. The stock parts could cause the gear to loose its neck in applications that require high performance. The "Beast" sunshell was developed by an aftermarket. The new model has a more robust overall material and a new thrust washer.

Valve Body

Modifying the 4L60E to perform performance applications requires replacing the valve body. Trans-Go's reprogramming kit includes everything you require to repair your valve body and improve its performance for high horsepower applications. Before the valve body is able to be fixed the separator plate has to be modified.

The separator plate is situated between the transmission body and valve body. It is a thin piece of sheet metal that has been cut with either 50 or 60 holes within it. The instructions for reprogramming tools provide 10 holes that have to be made. These are the pressure application as well as relief ports. Opening these up to .093" enhances the firmness of the shift and also adjusts the timing of every shift. Although it is not included in the kit instructions, we suggest drilling the solenoid A and B ports until .040". We found that this slightly increases shift time, which makes for a nice shift pattern in the street.

A brand new valve and spring are fitted to the body of the valve. This alters the converter regulater and isolator to allow the use of any type torque converter lockup plate.
